What is a Wig Cap?
To start off with the basics, lets define what a wig cap is. A wig cap is a lightweight, stretchy cap that you wear underneath your wig. It acts as a barrier between your scalp and the wig that offers various advantages to enhance comfort, protection, and overall wig performance.
The Many Benefits of Wig Caps:
1. Hair Protection: First and foremost, the barrier created by a wig cap protects your bio hair from unlikely, yet possible traction alopecia. Some wig wearers have reported traction alopecia from their wig rubbing against their bio hair. A wig cap prevents this risk.
2. Comfort and Fit: The barrier also helps increase the comfort of wearing a wig. Itching and irritation from a wig can be eliminated by simply putting on a wig cap. Caps also prevent the wig from sliding around, which can be common with thin, fine, slippery hair.
3. Hygiene Maintenance: Think of a wig cap like underwear for your head. A cap can absorb oils and sweat from your scalp, which not only helps your scalp health, but it also helps to keep your wig cleaner for longer. This prolonged time needed between washes can allow the wig to last longer.
4. Seamless Appearance: Wig caps create a smooth base, hiding any imperfections on your scalp, including lumps of bio hair. This makes for a seamless, natural look with your wig.
Types of Wig Caps:
There are many different types of wig caps out there, but these three are the ones I work with most often.
Nylon Caps: These are lightweight, stretchy, and extremely cheap. Some designs of nylon caps can be slippery on your head, causing the wig to slide off. Some are better fit to the head and are easy to put on and wear all day. I don't wear this cap often, as they are mainly used as sanitation caps when trying on wigs.
Mesh/Fishnet Caps: As a person who has longer bio hair, this is my cap of choice. They are breathable, comfortable, and usually come with a hole on top which makes it easy to tuck in and smooth out my bio hair. This is the most common cap type worn amongst wig wearers.
Bamboo Caps: Bamboo material is naturally breathable and soft, making this cap suitable for individuals with sensitive scalps. Many chemo patients enjoy this cap during the time that their scalp is sensitive from their treatment.
Wig Cap Care:
Most caps are recommended to be hand-washed. Regular washing is essential to ensure longevity and hygiene. Allow the cap to air dry completely before using it again.
How Do I Pick The Right Cap?
Choosing a wig cap can be simple when discussing with an expert. Material, color, size, and reason for wig wearing are all things that are to be considered when buying a wig cap. Many women find themselves experimenting with different caps to see which one works best for them individually.
Wig caps may seem like a small accessory, but they have a significant impact. Not everyone will choose to wear a cap, but those that do wear one appreciate the benefits the cap provides.
